The Nike Air Max 90 ‘Pirate Radio’ trainer celebrates London’s underground music scene in the early noughties from the likes of Rinse FM, DJ Slimzee & Dizzee Rascal.
Turn up the Sidewinder CD, turn off your Nokia 3210, zip up your Y-3 track top & lace up your AM90s. This latest release from Nike gives a nod to the Pirate Radio heydays of the early noughties from E3 & Tower Hamlets courtesy of Pirate Radio stations like Rinse FM. As the darker sounds of Garage started to merge into the early Grime sound in the early noughties, Pirate Radio stations like Rinse were at the forefront of London’s underground scene. Pirate Radio pioneers’ like DJ Slimzee provided a platform for up and coming MC talent like Dizzee Rascal & Wiley on his shows. The Nike Air Max 90 ‘Pirate Radio’ trainer celebrates this pinnacle era of London’s music scene and the importance of the early 90s runner to the scene.
For January 2021, Nike now introduce the ‘Pirate Radio’ trainer with super clean white leather uppers & contrasting metallic gold ‘jewel’ style swooshes to the sides. Highlights include radio wave graphics to the heel, something which featured heavily in Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Fix up, Look Sharp’ video from 2003 as well as pirate graphics to the translucent outsole. Other highlights include some added ‘Air Max’ bling to the laces for that ultimate ‘Grimey’ street style.
